Synopsis Shadow & Claw brings together the first two books of the tetralogy in one volume: The Shadow of the Torturer is the tale of young Severian, an apprentice in the Guild of Torturers on the world called Urth, exiled for committing the ultimate sin of his profession -- showing mercy toward his victim. Shadow & Claw contains the first two: The Shadow of the Torturer and The Claw of the Conciliator, which respectively won the World Fantasy and Nebula Awards. In fact, the first half of it (which is the book reviewed here), consisting of the separate novels The Shadow of the Torturer and The Claw of the Conciliator is rather good. I didn't know too much about it. For his crimes, Severian is sentenced to The Claw of the Conciliator: Severian's journey to Thrax continues and his path brings him into contact with both friend and foe. Part of the problem is that Book of the New Sun is really one story broken into four books (Shadow of the Torturer, Claw of the Conciliator, Sword of the Lictor, Citadel of the Autarch). I've had this book for a while, now – I bought it from a secondhand bookshop in Bristol when I was at university.
